Initiatives of the Tennessee Mouse Genome Consortium (November 1999)

A U01 was submitted to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on October 14, 1999, from the Tennessee Mouse Genome Consortium (TMGC) with Dan Goldowitz, UT-Memphis, as the principal investigator. This was in response to the RFA for Neuroscience entitled "Mouse Mutagenesis and Phenotyping: Nervous System And Behavior." This will be reviewed in February/March and sent to Council in May/June. A start date of August 1 is hoped for. The main institutions involved were ORNL, UT-Memphis, and University of Memphis, with secondary screens by Vanderbilt and St. Jude. A new proposal is being organized in response to an RFA "Entitled Genomic Applications for Heart, Lung, and Blood Research." This application is due to NIH in March 2000. Mice from the TMGC screens are being shipped fairly frequently from ORNL to Memphis. We are also shipping embryos to Memphis to use for rederivation purposes for the consortium. From the behavior testing screenotype, at least 14 variants have been identified. These are in various stages of testing. Some of these animals have been sent to Memphis and have shown to be variant in independent tests by Dan Goldowitz. .
